In alignment with the directives of the President of Cihan University–Duhok, Prof. Dr. Dr. Zeravan A. Asaad, and as part of the university’s Scientific Zakat initiative, the College of Nursing organized a workshop on November 24, 2025, in recognition of Lung Cancer Awareness Month. The workshop, titled “Hooked on Health: Deconstructing Smoking for Future Nurses,” was held in the presence of the Dean of the College, Dr. Layla M. Salih.

During the workshop, nursing students Ahmed S. Kanimazi and Avin Othman delivered a series of scientifically grounded presentations. They discussed the hazardous chemicals present in cigarettes and outlined the harmful effects of smoking on various body systems. The students also explained the mechanisms of nicotine addiction, the pathophysiological link between smoking and lung cancer, and the severe risks smoking poses to pregnant women and fetal development. Furthermore, they introduced behavioral and pharmacological interventions proven to support smoking cessation.

At the conclusion of the session, a question-and-answer segment was conducted to reinforce the significance of understanding this critical public health issue. Students who actively participated and answered questions were recognized with small gifts as an encouragement for their engagement.
